# .org domains

> Generic TLD operated by the Public Interest Registry. Originally for non-profits, today open to anyone, but the association still carries weight.

`.org` is run by the Public Interest Registry (PIR). It started life as the TLD for non-profits and community projects, and even though anyone can register today, much of the audience still associates it with NGOs, open-source, and public-interest work.

## Registry policy
