# .net domains

> Verisign-run generic TLD originally aimed at network infrastructure. Open today, frequently used as a .com fallback.

`.net` started as the TLD for network operators and ISPs. Verisign runs it under the same operational rules as `.com`, and ICANN dropped the network-operator restriction long ago. Today it's a general-purpose alternative when the `.com` is taken.
